making, automation, small-scale manufacturing

I'm a big believer in open source, and I do most of my work out in the open. Most of that happens on GitHub, but I also post some of the stuff I do here. Especially when doing something that's not software, I like to make an entry here.

  1. I made a notebook! I started this project many months ago and procrastinated on it quite a bit. Hard to say why, in retrospect, because working on it was extremely satisfying. I guess it's just daunting to do something you never did before.

It's a bit rough, due to my decidedly non-professional skills and equipment. But I like it! It serves me well enough, and I look forward to making another one, once this first one is full.

  2. It's been quiet here for a while! I've been sick, and decided take a break from most of my work.

Well, now I'm back, so expect some more noise here, if nothing else.

  3. I've taken down the preview product page for the customizable spacer I was planning to sell. Turns out, manufacturing a fully customizable product is really complicated, and I decided to go with something more manageable for my first product. I don't expect that to be a success anyway. It's all about learning.

However, the software I wrote for making a customizable OpenSCAD model available on a website is somewhat interesting, so I made that public and published a note about it.

As for the new product, I've settled on an idea and I'm currently working on the design. I'll let you know, once I have something to show.

  4. Did you see that Prusa XL announcement video? (There's also a blog post.) I mean, I'm not going to buy one; way too big for my needs! But man, those features. CoreXY, fully automatic first-layer calibration, tool changer, load cell sensor... if those are the signs of printers to come, I see more Prusa in my future.
